Mike is a crane operator working on the oil rigs off the Scottish coast. He is specialized in assembling the equipment for drilling and in fire prevention. He works for 12 hours a day, exposed to all temperatures and to the noise of the engines, breathing the penetrating smell of oil. After several days of waiting, his crew can finally transship the new drilling material from the supply ship: a steel pipe, 242 meters long that is going to be lowered deep into the sea for driving the drill. If everything works to the schedule, the rig will be ready to work after around 20 working hours. This is going to be hard and really tiring work as it requires full concentration from the whole team to avoid any fatal errors. Working on the oil rigs is very risky, but Mike loves his life and he would not change it for anything in the world.
SCUD, OUR ICON
It took months to realise that the leather on the steel toecap did not break at work but at the end of the shift, when the workers relaxed at the pub by rubbing the heel of one boot on the toe of the other.
So it was that the safety managers of the offshore oil platforms north of Aberdeen asked us to apply a rubber overcap to the leather. The same that we call today SCUD®.
